Swiss government info is leaked on the darknet.

The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) recently disclosed a significant data breach involving the IT firm Xplain, attributing the incident to the notorious Play ransomware gang. The breach, which occurred on May 23, 2023, has raised concerns as Xplain provides services to crucial Swiss government departments, including the army and police.

The compromised data encompassed sensitive and classified information sourced from entities such as the Federal Office of Police and the Federal Office for Customs and Border Security. Shockingly, this pilfered information found its way onto the darknet, posing serious threats to national security. A detailed analysis of the breach indicated that a staggering 1.3 million files were exposed. Of these, approximately 65,000 files were deemed pertinent to the Federal Administration, with a significant portion tied to the Federal Department of Justice and Police.

The nature of the compromised data is alarming, ranging from personal information to technical documents and even readable passwords. The breach not only jeopardizes the privacy of individuals but also compromises the integrity of classified government operations.

In response to the breach, the Swiss government has launched an administrative investigation, recognizing the urgency of collaborative efforts in managing and mitigating the impact of such cybersecurity incidents. This incident underscores the persistent and evolving threats posed by ransomware groups, urging the need for enhanced security measures and international cooperation to safeguard critical infrastructure and sensitive information.
