Recent Reported Ransomware Attacks

The US division of Xerox recently fell victim to a cyberattack, with potential implications for the compromise of personal information, as reported by the Record. On December 29th, the INC Ransom ransomware group added Xerox to its data leak site, suggesting that sensitive data may have been accessed during the breach.

Similarly, Akumin Inc., a Florida-based provider of radiology and oncology services, disclosed a data breach resulting from a ransomware attack that occurred on October 11, 2023. The breach, made public on December 29, exposed a plethora of sensitive information, including names, contact details, birthdates, Social Security and driver’s license numbers, as well as health insurance and medical data. In response to the incident, Akumin took its systems offline, initiated an investigation, and confirmed that confidential patient information was compromised.

Meanwhile, the Coop supermarket chain in Sweden is grappling with a cyberattack orchestrated by the Cactus ransomware gang at its Värmland branch since December 22. The gang, known for targeting large entities since March, exploited VPN vulnerabilities and malicious online ads to breach Coop's network. This attack disrupted card payments, leading to the implementation of a temporary website and the engagement of external cybersecurity assistance. Although stores remained open with alternative communication channels, this is not Coop's first encounter with ransomware, as it faced a similar incident in 2021 involving Kaseya ransomware, impacting 800 stores.
